Community at its Core
Butcher’s Daughter Market and Deli has increasingly become a hot spot in Uptown Roxboro since its doors opened on March 30, 2023. Located on the ground floor of The Roxboro Building and situated at the busiest intersection in the heart of Uptown, the convenient location is only one of the things that daily draws eager patrons.
Owner Allison Davis Satterfield had a vision of creating a space that people could come into, take a breath, and partake in a sense of community. For weeks leading up to the grand opening, she invited locals to share family photos of people from the community, past and present, which she incorporated into accent walls in the main market and in one of the event spaces available for meetings and small group gatherings. The images serve as a reminder that this is a place that’s meant to bring people together, to spark conversations, to remind us of a life that’s bigger than our to-do lists, and to do it all over great food.
Butcher’s Daughter seeks to provide healthy and unique menu options that can sometimes be hard to find in small towns. The name of the shop provides a hint as to the inspiration for some of the menu items, as Allison’s dad owns a meat market in Corolla, NC, named Butcher Block, that also specializes in quality cuts of meat, fresh seafood, and deli-style sandwiches. Butcher’s Daughter is definitely a nod to Butcher Block, which has become a tourist destination and a local favorite since opening the current location in 2013.
The Market Atmosphere
A subtle feature of Butcher’s Daughter that helps create the sense of community is the market atmosphere. There’s always a flurry of activity, whether from those meeting up to dine in, picking up to take out, popping in to explore, or stopping by to pick up market items to have on hand at home or to share as gifts.
The shelves and coolers are stocked with some of the most unique and delicious, regionally-made rubs and sauces, snacks and treats, and even craft beers and local wines. There are also hand-crafted and whimsical gifts and Butcher’s Daughter branded t-shirts and aprons.

Building Community by Promoting Community
Allison sees it this way: “One of the ways I look at marketing our business is less about advertisements and traditional things and more about what we can do to highlight how cool this town is. I know it’s better for me if the places around me are also doing really well.”
She remains engaged in the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce to stay abreast of what’s going on in the business community and what may be coming down the pike. Follow Butcher’s Daughter on social media and you won’t just learn about what’s going on there on any given day. You’ll see videos of activities and events taking place on Main Street, and you’ll hear about special events and offerings from neighboring businesses. You’ll get to see images and videos of other storefronts in Uptown Roxboro, and you’ll be encouraged to come and be a part of it all. The store frequently offers flexible hours to support Uptown Roxboro’s special events.
Where Do We Go from Here?
Allison is really in tune with the needs of her customers and is constantly adding features to make life better through Butcher’s Daughter patronage. For those days when there’s no time to pause, there is online ordering, and the pick-up kiosk is just by the rear entrance. A customer poll through social media recently prompted a shift in hours of operation, with the addition of Monday hours. When the community was looking for ways to support Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, a donation option was quickly added to the check-out process.
Longer-term, a goal for Butcher’s Daughter is to offer more locally-sourced products, especially produce, meats, and proteins from local farms. Getting a network in place to make that a more sustainable model is a current work in progress through a partnership with the local Cooperative Extension Office and the Kerr Tar Regional Council of Governments’ Food Council, of which Allison is a member.

“Make Us a Stop”
Asked her favorite thing about owning this business, Allison shared, “I think a lot of people don’t realize this happens here yet, but people come to Person County from everywhere. We’ve had people from San Francisco and from Tokyo. We have people from the Triangle and Triad. I have seen people laugh and literally dance and sing to our radio with complete strangers. That’s where the magic is. When it’s loud in here and the kitchen staff has to yell over to one another because it’s buzzing, that’s my favorite time. That can also be peak stress time, but you know that’s because something really cool is happening.”
Visit Butcher’s Daughter for the atmosphere as well as for the healthy and unique menu options that set it apart. For some, the deli-style sandwiches are the go-to, but the various salads, grain bowls, and açaí bowls with your choice of toppings will keep you coming back for more. There’s also a soup of the day and an open cooler area with healthy grab-and-go options.
Perhaps the most talked about menu option is the Meal of the Week. Each week, Butcher’s Daughter packages a flavorful, complete meal for two or four, to be picked up and cooked at home for easy planning of a delicious, nutritious, hot dinner.
Butcher’s Daughter offers large-order delivery as well as catering, and even has meeting rooms complete with audio/visual equipment to host small group events onsite. Online ordering and gift cards are also available for customer convenience.
Allison extends a simple invitation to those who have not yet visited Butcher’s Daughter: “We want you to come, but, really, to make us a stop as you’re out enjoying this great community. Make us a stop, and we can promise to give you a good time and a good meal.”
